Why I Created Brave Body Lab
Millions of children and teenagers experience anxiety and fear before medical procedures. In many cases, these experiences are temporary—but for some people, negative or frightening medical experiences during childhood can have effects that last much longer.
My interest in this subject became personal through my family.
When my father was ten years old, he went through a traumatic dental experience at a time when anesthesia and pain management were not as developed as they are today. Even now, decades later, he can find himself postponing dental care until the pain becomes difficult to tolerate.
As I grew up, I noticed similar reactions in other people around me. I found it difficult to understand why fully grown, responsible adults could become so anxious about what might seem like a simple medical or dental procedure. I had never personally been afraid of doctors, so I began wondering: why does this fear stay with some people for so long?
The more I researched the subject, the more I realized that childhood medical experiences can play an important role.
While working on a research paper about procedural fear in children, I came across studies describing connections between preoperative anxiety, negative medical experiences, postoperative pain, and behavioral responses in children. This made me wonder whether some of the same fear could be prevented—or at least made easier to manage—if children understood what was happening to them and had simple, age-appropriate ways to cope with it.
That question became the starting point for Brave Body Lab.
What Is Brave Body Lab?
Brave Body Lab is an educational project designed to help children and adolescents feel more informed and less overwhelmed by common medical experiences.
The idea is simple: being afraid is nothing to be ashamed of. Medical procedures can be unfamiliar, uncomfortable, and sometimes genuinely frightening, especially when you don't know what to expect.
By explaining common procedures and experiences in a clear, approachable way and introducing coping strategies supported by research, Brave Body Lab aims to make medical experiences feel a little less mysterious—and therefore, hopefully, a little less scary.
The information and approaches presented on the website are based on findings from published research, adapted into an accessible format for young people.
My Research
My interest in procedural fear began while researching the topic for an academic paper. Several studies I encountered highlighted the importance of children's psychological experiences before and during medical procedures, including the potential relationship between anxiety, pain, and behavioral responses.
These findings inspired me to turn my research interest into something practical and accessible: a website that could potentially reach someone at exactly the moment they need reassurance.

What I Hope to Achieve
My goal for Brave Body Lab is intentionally simple.
If this project helps even one child feel a little less nervous before a doctor's appointment, understand what is going to happen, or realize that being afraid does not make them weak, then I will consider it worthwhile. I don't expect a website to eliminate medical anxiety. Fear is a normal human response, and every person's experience is different.
But if information, preparation, and a little reassurance can make someone's next medical experience even slightly easier, then Brave Body Lab has achieved something meaningful.
You don't have to be fearless to be brave.
Get in Touch
I'd love to hear from people interested in the project, especially young people who have their own experiences with medical anxiety or healthcare.
Please do not send personal medical information, diagnoses, medical records, photographs of medical documents, or requests for urgent medical help. Brave Body Lab is an educational project and not a medical service.
